Last month, I was asked to speak at Vibewire’s Fastbreak event on a topic so fundamentally juicy and interesting I couldn’t say no: power.
The speakers were all amazing – from the founder of Concrete Playground to a young graduate of the School of Social Entrepreneurs who’s developing a learn-to-drive program for youth living independently from their parents.

The lessons of Barack Obama’s groundbreaking campaign for President continue to inspire and inform those seeking to bring about change in the modern era.

A few months ago I had an epiphany. Not one of the religious kind; but certainly not unrelated to religion.
My epiphany was when I realised that that the lessons we’re learning in building the progressive movement are very similar to the lessons learnt by the US mega-churches as they rapidly expanded, recruited new people, and became very effective at raising money and influencing the political process.

In the post-election period, we as a progressive community will have a lot of work to do. It’s really important that our movement learns from the mistakes that we all made during election campaigning; from what didn’t work, in a light-hearted way and in the spirit of collaboration and sharing lessons learnt.
